Witness and Judgement
As well as the confessants, there was a whole range of people who attested that witchcraft was rife in the area. These people were not suspects themselves, but claimed to witness things that made them convinced that witches were at large. They included the doctor, Christian Shaw's parents, servants employed in the Shaw household, and local people who were invited to witness the young girl's torments. Many local people throughout Renfrewshire added their voice to the investigation, especially when it came to describing the reputation of the accused.
There were also people charged with examining suspects and weighing up evidence. Most of these individuals came from the local area, and could be described as the elites. As well as examining statements from suspects and witnesses, they were also presented with a chronological document that was kept of Christian Shaw's suffering. This contained passages of events that took place at Bargarran House, with each passage ending with the signature of any individual who was present at the time of each incident that was described.
