Gallow Green
The Gallow Green, in the west end of Paisley, was the location for the execution of the guilty on the 10th of June 1697. Today all that remains is a small scrap of grass, a few trees, and an old low level stone well in the middle. It is surrounded by modern buildings. In 1697 it would have looked much different, given that the area would be open, and the Green itself expansive. It was one of two main sites of execution in Paisley, the other being in the aptly-named Gallowhill area of the town.
The Gallow Green is a hugely symbolic part of the story of the Renfrewshire witch hunt, and although very little remains in terms of its original scale, it is gratifying that it still holds a place in the local consciousness, sited as it is just across from Tannahill's cottage. The well in the middle of the Green is mostly dry these days, but the stories of the executions that took place in June 1697 have continued to flow through the generations.
